Ambrose and Henry Manaton, Brothers

Ambrose and Henry were small children when their father Ambrose (1589-1651) died. However, they may have benefited from the care of their aunts and uncles and from the marriages of their father.

Ambrose Manaton (1589-1651) married secondly Jane Mapowder (1617-1680), the daughter of Narcissus Mapowder of Holsworthy in Devon. This marriage must have been prior to 1646 when Ambrose Manaton is named with his wife Jane, Francis Luttrell and his wife Katherine (nee Mapowder) and Mary Mapowder in a suit. These same parties were also named together in suits in 1647.

These two marriages established relations with the Edgcumbe and Mapowder families, which, by extension were in the kinship of the Luttrell and Gorges families. Margaret, wife to Pierse Edgcumbe, was daughter of Sir Andrew Luttrell (d. 1538) and Margaret Windham (a descendant of John Howard, Duke of Norfolk). And, Sir Andrew Luttrell’s great-grandson, is the Francis Luttrell (1612/3-1677) who married Catherine (d. 1685/6), the dau of Narcissis Mapowder of Holsworthy, and sister to Jane, the second wife of Ambrose Manaton (1589-1651).

It seems possible that their maternal uncle, Francis Luttrell (1612/3-1677) may have exerted some influence over the lives of Ambrose and Henry and perhaps their two sisters Jane and Mary. Ambrose Manaton, Henry Manaton and William Trevisa, husband to Mary Manaton, were among the trustees names by Francis Luttrell of Greys Inn in his will of 1670 to manage his estate for the benefit of his daughters Katherine and Dorothy Luttrell and his son Narcissus Luttrell (who would become a famous diarist and collector of books, an acquaintance of the philosopher John Locke, and a highly regarded MP).

Ambrose Manaton was matriculated to Exeter College in 1666/7. His father had been dead for fifteen years. He was admitted to Greys Inn in 1666. Like his elder brother Ambrose, Henry was also admitted to Greys Inn, 1670/1.

By his marriage to Elizabeth Kelly, Ambrose Manaton (c.1647/8-1696) inherited Kilworthy House near Tavistock. Elizabeth was the great granddaughter, maternally, of Sir John Glanville of Kilworthy,  Ambrose married secondly Rachel (1669-1705), the daughter of Sir John Carew, Bt., of Antony.

Henry Manaton (1650-1716) married Martha Andrew of Lyme Regis by license in 1693. His primary seat was at Harwood in Calstock.

On the death Ambrose Manaton in 1696, Kilworthy House passed to his brother Henry Manaton (1650-1716) of Harwood. On Henry's death, Kilworthy passed in a testamentary trust to the Manaton cousins that Henry identified in his will.
